Achievements
MCTA is one of the earliest tourism associations in Kenya.
» From 1948 the organisation was under the umbrella of the The East African Tourist Travel Association until the closure of EATTA in 1962.
» In 1963 Mr John Soper became Chairmen and a building in the centre of Mombasa was constructed for the newly named Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association.
» Mr Edward Rodwell, a well known coast pioneer and author, took over from Mr Soper but the longest serving Chairperson was Mrs Lorna Hayes. More recently Mr Kuldip Sondhi, owner of the reef Hotel, was Chairman from 2001 until 2009.
» Major stakeholder in an ongoing relocation of beach traders to tourism markets that benefit the local communities.
» Initiated the creation of the Tourist Police unit
» Today theTPU has hundreds of well trained tourist police officers, most of them being at the coast, that handle civil and criminal security issues pertaining to tourists. The TPU is currently operating at major tourist areas on Mombasa Island, North Coast, Diani, Watamu and Malindi.
» Created a Code of Ethics and Conduct for tourism for the coast region.
» Granted a seat on the provincial liaison committee to coordinate matters relating to tourism at provincial level.
» Celebrates the World Tourism Day every year in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism, an event that witnesses diverse activities ranging from meeting guests at Mombasa’s Moi International Airport with traditional dancers and a Beach clean up program.
» MCTA prime activity is advocacy. The executive committee takes keen interest in all matters relating to the business of tourism at the coast region. |
